The Lincoln Cottage is located on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home (formerly known as the Old Soldier's Home), which was a few miles north of Washington City in Lincoln's time. Lincoln and his family resided there during the summer and autumn months in 1862, 1863 and 1864. Lincoln would travel by horseback or carriage between the cottage and the White House daily.
